Mastering the art of tasting is very important. Wine tasting is the process of analyzing the wine in your glass through the senses of sight, smell, taste and touch. The goal is the same, to examine the wines appearance, aroma, flavors and texture to understand how and where it was made, as well as the quality.
Wine tasting can be done at a winery’s tasting room, at a wine bar, at a tasting event or
even at a private tasting with a cellar master. You could also decide to have it at the comfort of your house, it’s all a matter of personal preference. When tasting wine its important to have a way to think about wine quality. Remember that the best wine is not necessarily
the most expensive, but rather the one you like the most based on your personal taste.
Are you planning to go for a wine tasting event but you are confused and scared? Worry not because it is normal to be nervous about wine tastings especially for first timers. Here are some of the basics you need to know when you get to a wine tasting event. First use a glass with a large bowl enough to be able to swirl your wine. Take short breaths through your nose and breathe out through your mouth to capture the most aroma, I bet most of you were not aware of this. Thirdly the first sip of wine will give you the most information, so pay attention before your taste buds get fatigued. Last but not least, don’t forget to spit rather swallow your tastes if you want to keep your senses sharp.
Other aspects to look through when tasting your wine is color. Pay attention to the color of your wine. The depth of color can give clues to the grape variety. For example, Pinot noir will be lighter and more transparent than deep ruby cabinet sauvignon. Sediment may indicate an older wine.
But did you know that wines change colors the older they get? Now you know!
Red wine is darker when they are young and loose color as they age. For the white wines they start out lighter and become more gold or brown as they get older.
When it comes to aroma use sense of smell. Different wines portray different smells depending with the ingredients used to make the wine. Its important to note the intensity of the wine aroma. some wines like Pinot grigio smell shy while others like sauvignon Blanc, seem to jump out of the glass. Most white wines have the smell of citrus fruits, orchard fruits like apples and tropical fruits like pineapples. For red wines think of red fruits like berries and cherries. The aromas are identified by the ingredients like herbs, flowers, spices like cinnamon, nutmeg & cloves.
All wines should be tasted; some should be sipped, but with others, drink the whole bottle
Paulo Coelho
The quality of wine is usually indicated by how long the flavors last in your mouth, called the finish. A wines complexity can also help you determine its age and quality level older wines and higher quality wines tend to have more layers of flavors.
“Accept what life offers you and try to drink from every cup. All wines should be tasted; some should only be sipped, but with others, drink the whole bottle.” Paulo Coelho.
